Ok, so we didn’t invent saddle squares. But I think we have taken it to a new level of accuracy. Instead of chopping an extrusion to length, we instead machined these from a billet of aircraft grade aluminum. That is by far the most accurate way to make anything.

This is the perfect tool for marking a 45 degree mitre before you make the cut and for that matter checking the cut afterward. What makes a saddle square different from any other marking square is that it wraps around the edge of the board. This makes it possible to mark the angle AND the front edge. Think how much easier it is to check a miter cut if you have a vertical reference. If you’ve cut even just a few miters, you most likely have noticed that the miter angle might be good but the cut isn’t perpendicular to the face. That’s a sure fire way to make a joint that’s open on one side.

As Rich from Woodpeckers says. "After I machined mine, I tested it by first using it to set my miter gauge angle to the blade (not what it’s intended for by the way), then marked my miter cut on two separate boards, cut to the pencil line and checked the resulting 90 degree joint with my certified engineers square. Not even a sliver of light. Can’t beat that. (In the interest of full disclosure, I was using a brand new Ridge Carbide TS2000 saw blade and an Incra Miter Gauge calibrated with the saddle square.)"

The inside of the square will fully straddle a 2-1/2 (63.5mm) x 3/4 (19mm) board. Length is 5-1/2 inches 140mm.

These will be manufactured in early Jaunuary and will be shipped by January 31st 2011.

As per other Limited Edition products from Woodpeckers these will not be re-run for 12 months if ever.
